Context
Wunderdog is a boutique consultancy for web transformation.
While being in between projects, I proactively maintained the company website, working closely with the marketing team and one other developer.
Solution
The first task was to improve website Lighthouse scores, thus increasing web performance as well as accessibility.
I also fixed bugs, refactored components for better reusability, removed dead code, and introduced automated E2E testing, amongst many other things.
To address SEO issues while changing page and blog post slugs, I wrote a Gatsby plugin that manages redirects automatically, and released it as open source.
Thanks to my work, the Lighthouse score went up to 90, thus helping the website to load faster and increasing SEO. Following my work, this created momentum for other developers to help with the website in a more structured way, while the refactors made their job easier, allowing for faster delivery.
Reflections
This was a great initiative for me to take while being in-between projects. I was especially happy about creating the Gatsby plugin, since I recognized a problem that I could solve not just for Wunderdog, but also for other people using Gatsby.
