Context
Jolt provided remote live education in real-world classes.
Due to a high workload, they needed help maintaining Eyelevel, a custom Zoom-like desktop app that connected Jolt’s teachers and classrooms, and to build the required API endpoints.
I worked with them as a freelance full-stack developer, joining a Scrum team of 4 people.
Solution
I implemented video calls, screen sharing, automated student/teacher introductions, pre-class sound checks, and much more, both on the frontend and backend.
Due to streaming reliability issues, I also migrated the platform from using Opentok to Twilio. As a result, video streaming became more consistent.
Thanks to CI/CD, my features and bugfixes were used in real live classrooms right away and improved the experience for both students and teachers.
Reflections
I learned a lot of tech in this project. This was my first encounter with React and Node.js, which I self-learned on the job.
I worked closely with the CTO, who had very high expectations when it comes to code quality and usability. Thanks to his feedback, I was able to upgrade the quality of my deliveries.
